Wat Khao Phra Bat

Temple of the Sacred Footprint Hill

Wat Khao Phra Bat sits atop a small hill in the Bang Lamung district north of central Pattaya, named for a sacred Buddha footprint enshrined at its summit. The footprint — a flat stone impression believed by worshippers to mark where the Buddha stepped during his legendary visit to Thailand — is the spiritual focus of the temple and the reason pilgrims climb the hill rather than the views, though those are considerable.

The temple is one of the older religious sites in the Pattaya area, predating the resort development that transformed this stretch of coastline from the 1960s onward. It serves primarily a local Thai congregation from the Bang Lamung district and surrounding communities, giving it an authenticity and lack of tourist infrastructure that distinguishes it from the more accessible temple sites closer to the resort strip.

The hill setting gives the temple a naturally meditative quality. The climb through forested slopes, the relative quiet at the summit, and the presence of resident monks conducting daily practice create an atmosphere quite different from the flat, easily accessible temples of central Bangkok. Visitors who make the effort to reach it find a functioning religious community largely undisturbed by the resort city visible in the distance.

The temple grounds contain several Buddha images of varying sizes, a small viharn housing the sacred footprint, and a number of merit-making facilities used by local worshippers. The hilltop offers views across the Bang Lamung plain toward the coast and, on clear days, toward the islands of Ko Larn and Ko Sak offshore.

"A sacred footprint on a forested hill — older than the resort city below it, and quietly indifferent to it"

Historical Note

Sacred Buddha footprints are found at significant sites across Thailand, each believed to mark a location visited by the Buddha during his mythological travels through Southeast Asia. The footprint at Wat Khao Phra Bat is one of several in the Chonburi province, part of a network of pilgrimage sites that connected communities across the eastern Gulf coast long before the development of modern transport infrastructure.
