How It Works

A systematic approach to preserving Thailand's temple heritage

The Purpose

Thai Temple Archive is a comprehensive photographic documentation project dedicated to preserving the architectural, cultural, and spiritual heritage of Buddhist temples across Thailand.

Our mission is to create a permanent digital record of these sacred spaces before time, weather, and changing circumstances alter or erase them. Each temple represents centuries of craftsmanship, devotion, and cultural identity that deserves to be preserved for future generations.

This archive serves multiple purposes: it provides researchers with detailed visual documentation, offers the Thai people access to their cultural heritage, and creates a historical record that will remain accessible long after physical structures may deteriorate.

The Process

01

Temple Selection

We identify temples for documentation based on historical significance, architectural value, geographical location, and current condition. Priority is given to lesser-known temples that may lack existing documentation.

02

Initial Visit & Coordination

We visit the temple to meet with the abbot, temple committee, or caretaker. During this meeting, we explain the project's purpose, request permission to photograph, and discuss any restrictions or special considerations regarding sacred areas or ceremonies.

03

Equipment Preparation

We prepare professional photography equipment including cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, and stabilization gear. All equipment is maintained to ensure the highest quality documentation possible.

04

Full-Day Documentation

We return on a scheduled date to conduct a comprehensive photographic survey. This typically requires an entire day to properly document:

  • • Main temple structures and ordination halls
  • • Architectural details and ornamental elements
  • • Interior murals and religious artwork
  • • Buddha images and sacred objects (where permitted)
  • • Surrounding structures, stupas, and grounds
  • • Inscriptions, plaques, and historical markers

We work respectfully within the boundaries set by temple authorities, ensuring our presence does not disrupt religious activities or violate sacred protocols.

05

Post-Processing & Archiving

All photographs are professionally processed, organized, and catalogued. We add metadata including location, date, architectural features, and historical context. The complete archive is then uploaded to our website, making it freely accessible to everyone.

06

Photo Album Gift

We design and print a high-quality photo album featuring the best images from the documentation session. This album is presented to the temple as a gift and gesture of gratitude, providing them with a permanent record of their temple's current state.

Funding & Independence

This project operates entirely without external funding or investment.

All expenses — including transportation, accommodation, equipment, photo albums, and website maintenance — are covered from our personal resources. We do not accept payment from temples, charge for access to photographs, or seek commercial sponsorship that would compromise the project's integrity.

This financial independence ensures that our documentation remains objective, comprehensive, and free from commercial or political influence. The archive belongs to the public domain and will remain freely accessible in perpetuity.

Current Status

At present, this project is conducted by two individuals: Vladislav Rakhvalskii and Nadezhda Rakhvalskaia. We handle all aspects of the work — from temple coordination and photography to post-processing and album production.

While we currently operate independently, we recognize that documenting thousands of temples across Thailand is an ambitious undertaking that would benefit from collaborative effort.

Future Collaboration

We welcome support from individuals who share our commitment to cultural preservation. Potential areas of collaboration include:

Photography

Skilled photographers who can assist with documentation sessions or conduct independent temple surveys following our established protocols.

Translation

Thai-English translators to help with temple coordination, historical research, and communication with temple authorities.

Transportation

Drivers familiar with rural areas who can assist in reaching remote temples across different regions of Thailand.

Research

Historians and researchers who can provide context, verify information, and contribute to the historical documentation of temples.

All collaboration must align with our core principles: non-commercial operation, respect for religious sites, and commitment to making all documentation freely accessible.

If you are interested in contributing to this project, we would be grateful to hear from you.
